Workshops in the municipality of Sopishte
Датум: 4/14/2011
Women's Citizen Initiative Atico as part of its annual program conducts workshops with the representatives from the local self-governments in the territory of the municipalities of Skopje, which aim to establish continuous collaboration and make joint contribution to the promotion and the advancement of gender equality and effective implementation of legislation. WCI Antico believes that the collaboration with the local self-government is of particular importance, precisely because the local community is in direct contact with the citizens and could map their priorities and needs, and incorporate it in the local programs and plans.

Therefore, in the municipality of Sopiste 4 workshops were held where the topics covered were: “Fundamentals of discrimination”, “Lobbying and advocacy”, “Collecting gender disaggregated data and gender analysis” and “Gender budgeting.” Active participation in the workshops took a total of 11 representatives - from the educational institutions (4) and from the municipality (7 - Mayor, president of the EOC, coordinator for equal opportunities, analyst, representative from the financial department, administrative workers).

At one of the workshops the mayor attended who supported the collaboration of the municipality with NGOs and he expressed willingness to support the activities of the EOC with some funding from the municipal budget within the capabilities of the municipality. However, the group which participated was especially active in the discussion session for collecting of gender-distributed data. The representatives from the educational institutions said that they regularly update their statistical data and have gender-disaggregated data which if required is submitted to the municipal government. On the other hand, the coordinator for equal opportunities mentioned that the data collection in certain sectors is a problem due to lack of staff and finance to conduct the necessary research.
From all of the four realized workshops the conclusions that arose are of particular importance for appreciating the needs and provision of further education of the administration and all other parties involved in the development of local government units. Some of the important conclusions are the following:
- Existence of insufficient information and education of the entities in the municipality of the contact center agents and legal protection and prevention of discrimination;
- Regarding the violence against women as one of the cruelest forms of discrimination, the participants stressed the need for education from early age (to included such programs in the educational process) in order to prevent the emergence of prejudices and stereotypes that continue to lead to discriminatory behavior and violence;
- The need for existence of gender-disaggregated statistic data and gender analysis that will help them more easily and comprehensively to create activities and programs that they are working on;
- The acquired knowledge, the participants will use in the particular efforts of the Equal Opportunity Commission to provide funds to implement the local action plan and to secure opening of gynecological clinic and kindergarten in the municipality, because the absence of institutions of this kind in the municipality is a major problem that should be addressed.
