Conducted activities under the project “My voice – my decision”
Датум: 11/15/2010
The implementation of meetings with focus groups took place between 11/03/2010 - 13/11/2010 in 8 rural communities in the Republic of Macedonia. In consultation with the local organizers and the representatives from the Centre for Research and Policy Making (CRPM) were determined the right period for holding the meetings. These meetings were facilitated by representative from CRPM.
The purpose of these meetings was to determine whether the level of awareness is increased about the problem of women’s votes that are being abused during the election process (family voting, voting on behalf of others or other types of irregularities) as a result of the previously conducted trainings and meetings on this topic. The comparative observations will be used in order to create the following activities to overcome and eliminate this phenomenon.
The focus groups were held at:
v     Village Lazani, municipality Dolneni - 03/11/2010 (9 participatnts)
v     Village Tearce municipality Tearce - 11/04/2010 (7 participants)
v     Village Livada, municipality of Struga - 06/11/2010 (10 women present)
v     Municipality of Shuto Orizari - 11/08/2010 (7 participants)
v     Village. Aracinovo, Skopje - 10.11.2010 (8 participants)
v     Village. Cegrane, municipality of Gostivar - 11/11/2010 (11 participants)
v     Municipality of Saraj, Skopje - 12/11/2010 (7 participants)
v     Village Batinci, municipality Studenicani - 13/11/2010 (10 participants)
The total amount of participants was 69 women.
The family voting and other irregularities during the electoral process can seriously impair the credibility of the elections, the reliability on the results and in general it has negative impact on the democratic processes in Macedonia. Especially concerning is the fact that women are the most common victims of such phenomena, nevertheless remarkable is the appearance of abuse of women’s votes during the election process, especially in the rural areas.
In order to overcome these problem activities were undertaken for informing the women about the electoral process and their awareness was strengthen in sense of their own decision making. In other words, women should be familiar with all the aspects of the electoral process, the method of voting, the possible irregularities during the voting and the measures that should be taken to protect their decisions from the pressures and abuse. All these aspects were subject of the meetings with the focus groups. Also, they discussed about their opinions and attitudes and they had the opportunity to ask specific questions and to get more information.
Conclusions from the meetings:
- To intensify the education of women before the elections and to include young people;
- Women feel frightened, confused and they do not know how to act when they are organized taken to vote and get instructions on who to vote for – they need to be more informed on hoe to react in such cases;
- Women are not satisfied with the proposed candidates and do not have much choice to whom will they give their vote;

Therefore, we can conclude that there is progress from the initial condition, but there is a need for continuous education particularly regarding the field of mechanisms to protect the right of women to make their own choices, punitive measures and the responsible parties where women can turn for help and support.
