Different marking of 8th of March – International Women’s Day
Датум: 3/8/2010
Is 8th March a holiday, celebration of occasion for festivities, or is it a day for marking, summing up the achievements, problems and challenges, moreover, action for a real gender equality, promotion and protection of human rights of women?!
Taking into consideration all the stereotypical behaviors and celebrations that give one twisted image of the meaning of this historical day and the centuries-long struggle of women against patriarchy, her value that in the past, and still today, is discriminating her, marginalizing and turning women into second row citizen.
Women’s Civic Initiative Antiko for 8th March addresses all citizen of Republic of Macedonia – the civil society, media, educational institutions, and all the relevant governmental institutions, especially women parliamentarians and counselors, and all the ones on high management positions, to give their support for promotion of the true meaning of the marking of this significant part.
In stead of organization of stereotypical celebrations, gift-cards and presents, we should all together engage actively in the efforts and commitments made for the promotion, advancement and protection of many groups and categories of women who are discriminated and unprotected. We should improve the position and everyday life of every woman citizen of Republic of Macedonia. We should fight against this bad practice and culture of “celebration”. We should input new spirit and energy for powerful start or continuance of all already started efforts and fights for overcoming sexism, gender prejudice and stereotypes that are stepping onto women’s dignity on purpose or not, are humiliating women and putting them in discriminated position, especially on this ”holiday”.
For the women around the world, the symbol of this international day has different meaning. It is an occasion to reconcile the achievements, contributions and successes in the struggle for equality, peace and development. This date, also gives the opportunity for women to unite and other progressive forces to create networks that will mobilize and undertake actions on creating significant changes in relations to the disadvantaged position of women in family and social life on local and global level.
This year, during the 54th meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, “Beijing +15” and the global marking of the international women’s day under the motto “Equal rights, equal possibilities: Progress for all”, we invite you together to join the local and global feminist movement, because that means nothing else but political, economical, social and communal equality between men and women. That movement seeks to free women from violence, sexist behavior and traditional gender roles. We should all together stand for the acceptance of woman by the society as equal person that has the same rights, possibilities and responsibilities with the other half of humanity.
Patriarchy is the basis for gender oppression. The individual repressions/violence in the home, where 90% of the victims are women,go beyond the “family threshold” and become violence and repression in the society and all of its segments.
Sexisms, as form of social discrimination and segregation are imbedded on the bases of gender - sex, are present in our lives and are daily occurrence in the public, political, economical and cultural life. Women’s sexuality is abused and women are perceived as sexual object. The woman is often a target to sexist gaffes and disparaging and disrespectful jokes.
Women’s poverty and unemployment create the possibilities for part of them to be victims of trafficking, and prostitution. They are publicly displaced, punished and downgraded, while their customers stay unpunished and anonymous traders of human bodies.
That is why we are calling all the progressive and strong women and men to raise their voice and personally engage in saying NO to this kind of celebrations. We call them to be active citizen who will initiate and create changes.
Happy 8th of March…With sincere wishes for happier and equitable times and occasions for real daily celebrations of female successes in all the spheres of the economic, public and political life of women.
