RECENT NEWS AND ACTIVITIES
First “School for multiculturalism” 23-25th April, Ohrid
Датум: 4/27/2010

The Women Civic Initiative Antiko from 23-25th April 2010 within the Civica Mobilitas program supported by CIRa and financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, in hotel Klementica, Ohrid organized School for multiculturalism.

A contest was announced on the web page of Antiko and in the written media on which many applicants were interested in; however, only 22 young people at the age of 18-25 were chosen. The participants were from different ethnic background (Macedonian (36,4%), Albanian (36,4%), Turkish (9,1%) and Roma (18,1%)) and from 13 different cities in Republic of Macedonia (Tetovo, Gostivar, Skopje, Bitola, Negotino, Kumanovo, Makedonska Kamenica, Berovo, Veles, Delchevo, Shtip, Kicevo and Ohrid).

The participants arrived on 23rd April, a day planned for introduction with the organization members, facilitators and the participants, and for introduction to the topic of this seminar – multiculturalism. The opening was accompanied by the good atmosphere and cohesion between the participants and acceptance of the facilitators as part of the group.

The following day, before the lunch break, two topics were introduced: one was on the perception that everyone has on the notion of culture, a topic within which the participants got actively involved through games in expressing their opinion for that what this notion means to them and listening to the opinions of the other participants; and the second topic was on the stereotypes and identities, a topic that lead to interesting debate in positive meaning. In the afternoon the seminar continued with the topic on cultural values and getting to know others. Once again, through games (role play) everyone had the chance of putting themselves in the shoes of others that belong to a different culture or sub-culture. This way of team work always contributed to laughter and association, but also to effective work that lead to strong and emotive conclusions and clear perception of how one society functions. The session that caused most attention included the concepts of peace and conflict. The fact that the participants shared their personal experiences, showed that they the trust of the facilitators, as in each other. The topic of multiculturalism and its development was spent in good atmosphere, again through role play.

The finalization of the seminar was on the topic of activism. Through this part the participants were familiarized with some kinds of activism in society (although the biggest part of the participants are already activist in civil or student organizations). Also, they had the chance to learn about the ways of reaching those important for implementation of a project. The most important part were the steps in creation of project and their realization.

The most important conclusions from the seminar “School of multiculturalism” are:

- The bigger part of the participants posed the question on how to get involved in the programs of Antiko or how to volunteer in NGOs members of WCI Antiko’s network;

- During the whole seminar the participants communicated with each other regardless of their ethnic belonging, age and gender. They were also open to criticism, they listen and were listen to, talked on topics which easily could have turn into conflict;

- Multiculturalism was part of this seminar not only as a topic of study, but the participants themselves were symbol of multiculturalism. Through this type of events, the young people were given the chance of getting a different perception of society.
