Within the Project “Through education and strengthening towards social inclusion and active citizenship - 2” the first cycle of workshops was held
Датум: 8/4/2010

By encouraging activism and social inclusion among rural women and strengthening their capacities for identification of their problems and implementation of the actions in the community, an improvement and promotion of the status and position of women in rural areas will be endorsed. WCI Antiko and its local coordinators within the project “Through education and strengthening towards social inclusion and active citizenship - 2” supported by UNIFEM, implemented the first cycle of 16 workshops in 4 rural areas: Tearce, Mogila, Debar and Gostivar.

In the period from 26.06.2010 to 30.07.2010, during the 16 workshops the women were introduced to the following topics: gender concepts, gender equality, women human rights/ women questions, action planning and making action plan.

Within the topic of gender concepts, in which the women got the chance to familiarize themselves with the basic notion of gender and sex, with the gender roles, existing stereotypes and discrimination. Through this topic, they expressed their biggest needs and problems as unemployment, the need for decision-making that can help them strengthen professionally and the problems in their communities for example: the lack of public hygiene that directly influences the health of the inhabitants in the municipality.

The workshops that contained the topic of gender equality included explanation of the notion, the quantity and quality aspect of it, the gender sensitive politics, laws, political principles and quotes. The participants were actively involved in the exercises and worked together for the realization of the local action, but also for further cooperation in other activities, and including of other women for more successful realization of the actions.

The topic of the third workshop was women human rights. Through this topic, the women were presented with the concepts and limitations (religious, customary and legal), the legal protection that is available, the existing conventions etc. Once again, the topic was perceived as positive motivation for the participants who discussed the traditional relations in their families and in the community they live in.

The first cycle of workshops ended with the workshop on the topic of action planning and preparation of action plan. This topic was presented through the idea for positive and negative motivation and the possibility of making the NGO sector a place for female association and action. The workshops were completed with success and the women participants enthusiastically were ready for the preparation of the local action.

These workshops included 100 women from the rural areas from Albanian, Macedonian, Turkish and Roma nationality, as Macedonian Muslim. According to the data collected, the biggest number (64%) of the participants at these workshops only have finished primary school, while only 13% have finished university. In addition, an alarming fact is that 76% of the women are unemployed, and 92% are not socially active.
