The women in Bitola recommend 50% women and 50% men in the Municipal Council
Датум: 3/14/2009

“The local self-government is a place where the women can express their abilities, knowledge, and skills” – is one of the messages of the intersectoral network established by the participants of the seminar “Women Can Do It”, sent to the Bitola’s public and the relevant structures in the community. Namely, the campaign for increasing number and equal participation of women in the managerial positions of the local self-government structures is a result of the association and activities of women from different political parties, local self-government, and civic organizations before the local elections in March 2009.

The intersectoral network formed by the participants of the seminar “WCDI” has carried out a number of activities within the local action “I want to be a counselor – more women in the Municipal Council.” The activities being carried out as part of this local action were public opinion survey among the citizens in Bitola for introduction of the affirmative measures for equal participation: 50% men and 50% women.

The survey comprised 300 respondents. By analysis were obtained relevant information, which served the group to design a media campaign for providing an impact to the civic awareness for the importance and the contribution of women’s participation in the building and improving of the economic, political, social and cultural life in the community.

The printed brochures and leaflets with promotional, informational, and educational content, disseminated in the city centre and in the wider urban area, have conveyed the message to the citizens and the relevant structures and institutions. As part of the local action, a panel discussion was organized. To this end, invitations were sent to all political parties, structures of the local self-government, NGOs, media, etc. On 14.03.2009 in Bitola was organized a public debate where representatives of the political parties and other relevant structures took part. In the panel discussion, the representatives of the group “Women Can Do It” presented the results of the survey and started a debate on aforementioned issues, regarding equal participation of women and men in the local self-government bodies. The debate was followed by the local electronic media from Bitola.

WCI Antico and NPA funded the local action and the campaign. The informal group continues to build its structure working intensively on its own rise and sustainable development. Its purposes are to carry on with activities in this field. Antico has expressed readiness to give support and to facilitate the group in the process of defining of its mission, purposes, duties and active involvement in the community.
