Debate for the Strategy for integrated education in Kichevo

In order the citizens from Kichevo to learn about the steps towards integrated education, which are taken by the Ministry of Education and Science was organized a municipal meeting on the 17th of March 2011 in hotel Kichevo. At this meeting were present: Knut Vollebaek (High Commissioner on National Minorities), Nikola Todorov (Minister of Education), Abdulaqim Ademi (Deputy Prime Minister), Blagoja Despotoski (Mayor of the Municipality of Kichevo), Dona Kosturanova (YEF), Marjan Zabrchanec (executive director of YEF), Gjuner Nebiu (President of WCI Antico) and Xhabir Derala (NGO CIVIL).  
 
At the beginning of this meeting, the Mayor Despotoski stated that the municipality Kichevo stands for the integrated education and it is ready to integrate it in the education all the positive experience in the world and in communities like this one in order to increase the quality of education.     
 
According to the statement of Minister Todorov the education is one of the greatest challenges and segment of our social life which makes the basic difference between whether a country will be highly developed. Only the knowledge can bring higher level of investment and economic development. Therefore, the Government puts the education among the five major priorities and allocates funds for development of education on all levels. The document developed as strategy towards integrated educational system is divided on 5 thematic groups. The first one is about integration through joint activities of the students who attend classes in a different language, the second aims towards integration through increasing the mutual knowledge of the languages among students and adults, while the third group addresses to the complex issue of adaptation of the curriculum and textbooks. The fourth group covers the topic of qualification of the teachers related with competencies for integration in the education. The fifth group includes the management of schools in a decentralized context, proposes measures for strengthening the job security of teachers, defining the conditions of employment of assistants of directors, authorized municipal inspectors, municipal councils of education, defining the responsibilities of the state institutions versus those of municipal authorities in the field of education.          
 
– We are aware that the education is a place where multiculturalism and coexistence should be taught, but schools should also be places where the students from different ethnic communities will get to know each other and will eliminate all the prejudices. This is why we have decided to support the Strategy for integrated education – stated the Deputy Prime Minister Ademi.

The Ministry of Education and Science and OSCE have developed this document with join efforts and as subsequent measures from the recommendations from the High Commissioner on National Minorities of OSCE in January 2008. – My office tries to help the Government of Republic of Macedonia with all the challenges that it’s facing and will continue to provide support in implementing the Strategy. The integration means that we live and work together even though we are not all the same, we have our own differences. Our identities are important to each of us and this is a balance which the Government should determine and work on it – said the High Commissioner on National Minorities of OSCE.
